The Bedford Park Society
is not a 'Residents’ Association'. Founded in 1963 by two local residents, Tom Affleck
Greeves and Harry Taylor, the Society’s main aim is to protect the character of the garden
suburb. It is primarily concerned with the
maintaining the buildings of Bedford Park and preserving the wider setting. It takes a keen interest in their maintenance and appropriate development to ensure that it is
sympathetic to their architectural and historic importance.
Originally backed by
poet and conservation campaigner Sir John Betjeman, the Society’s first
task was to have the buildings of Bedford Park listed.
This was achieved in 1967, following an exhibition organised by the Society to draw attention to what by then had become an urgent problem. As a result over 350 houses, the former Stores, the Tabard Inn, the Club, the Church of St Michael and All Angels and its Parish Hall were all listed Grade II.
